True health isn’t about chasing perfection—it’s about choosing progress and honoring the body God gave you.

Welcome to the Intentional Wellness Hub at Sweet New Roots. If you’re reading this, you probably know what it feels like to be exhausted, depleted, and constantly stressed—to feel the physical toll of striving, hurry, and the constant pressure of daily life. Throughout my career as a healthcare communicator, I witnessed firsthand how fragmented, complex, and often fear-driven the world of health advice can be.

We are flooded with conflicting information, leaving us feeling guilty about yesterday and anxious about tomorrow.

What is Intentional Wellness?

If the cycle of life in the fast lane has left you depleted, you’ve likely felt the sting of prioritizing hustle over rest. We often look with envy at those who seem to ‘have it all figured out,’ believing self-care requires abundant time and resources. But intentional wellness isn’t about rigid self-discipline or chasing external perfection; it’s about choosing a gentler rhythm, regardless of our schedule.

We approach wellness not as another achievement to be chased, but as a form of stewardship—a commitment to honor the physical and mental capacities God has gifted us.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the best approach is holistic. The choices we make—from the whole foods we choose for our table, to the thoughts we allow to take root, to the essential rest we permit our spirit—directly impact our capacity to live a life of peace and purpose.

This comprehensive guide is designed to dismantle the shame surrounding health and equip you with practical, evidence-based tools that move past quick fixes. This is about embracing sustainable, life-giving habits that create whole well-being.

the inflammation-burnout cycle

Chronic stress and inflammation are the silent thieves of our purpose. They erode our energy, steal our mental clarity, and leave us running on empty. This low-grade, constant biological stress is often accelerated by the high-stress, hurried culture we live in.

the cortisol connection

When Stress Becomes Systemic

My decades of experience in clinical communications informs our understanding of the direct physiological link between stress and nutrition. When life stress is chronic, our adrenal glands are continuously prompted to pump out the hormone cortisol. This isn’t just a mental state; this is a physical health crisis.

This constant flood of stress hormones is devastating: it disrupts deep sleep patterns, contributes to persistent belly fat, elevates blood sugar, and—most critically—promotes systemic, silent inflammation throughout the body. This inflammation impacts everything from joint pain to mental acuity. Intentional wellness means addressing this destructive cycle head-on through the dual forces of nourishment and stillness.

the power of antioxidants

Your Internal Defense System

Before we look at specific recipes, we must understand our body’s primary defense against chronic stress: Antioxidants.

When the body is under stress (physical, mental, or environmental), it produces unstable molecules called free radicals. These radicals damage healthy cells—a process known as oxidative stress—contributing directly to aging, chronic disease, and the pervasive feeling of burnout.

Antioxidants are the compounds found in vibrant, plant-forward foods that neutralize these free radicals, effectively putting out the biological “fires.” By flooding your system with foods rich in antioxidants, you are actively supporting your body’s resilience and protecting your long-term health. We believe this is an act of intentional stewardship—giving your body the God-given tools it needs to thrive.

The Gut-Brain Connection

The gut is often called the “second brain” because it produces over 90% of the body’s serotonin, a key neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood, happiness, and sleep. The health of your gut microbiome is, therefore, inseparable from your emotional and mental well-being.

By treating our gut well through wholesome ingredients (especially fiber and fermented foods), we directly support our serotonin production and stabilize our mood. This is crucial because mental clarity and emotional stability are essential for discerning and living out God’s calling and finding peace in the everyday.

The Role of Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition

Our focus is on foods that actively calm the body, providing a slow, steady release of energy crucial for both mental clarity and mitigating the sharp, mood-altering swings that anxiety and stress often cause. This intentional approach involves prioritizing key anti-inflammatory agents like Omega-3 fatty acids, vibrant phytonutrients found in colorful produce, and sufficient fiber, offering a physical defense against the toll a hurried life takes on the body.

Ingredient and Nutrient Guides

Knowledge is Power.

The confusion around what to eat dissipates when you understand why certain nutrients benefit your body. Our guides simplify the science, helping you stock your kitchen with purpose and confidence.

At Sweet New Roots, our focus on ingredients is an extension of our faith. We believe that whole foods are an act of God’s provision—a perfect design for our health that is vastly superior to highly processed alternatives. By choosing foods in their most natural state, we participate in the stewardship of the health we’ve been given.

Our goal is to encourage you toward a more intentional life through the choices you make—and we’re right here with you. Here’s our approach.

  • Eat Seasonally. Connecting your plate to the natural, divine rhythm of the earth. When you eat seasonally, you not only receive food at its peak flavor and nutrient density, but you also participate in the ancient wisdom of trusting God’s timing.
  • Understand Provision. Appreciating the specific benefits God has packed into every fruit, vegetable, and spice, recognizing them as active tools for healing and support.
  • Nourish Body and Mind. Choosing ingredients that actively heal and support mental clarity, making intentional food choices that serve your body and your purpose.

Essential Nutrients

Combating Burnout

We break down the benefits of key nutrients critical for combating burnout and promoting mental health, giving you actionable steps to incorporate them. These are the tools God gave our bodies to manage stress and sustain peace.

Magnesium

This mineral is essential for over 300 bodily functions, including nerve and muscle relaxation and energy production. Low magnesium levels are commonly linked to increased stress, anxiety, and poor sleep. Supplementation can help, but prioritizing magnesium-rich whole foods is the most intentional and effective way to restore balance.

B Vitamins

Crucial for cellular energy production and supporting a healthy stress response, B vitamins (including Folate and B12) help your body manage the relentless demands of a busy life. A deficiency can lead to feelings of exhaustion, which easily mimics burnout.

Fiber

Fiber is the unsung hero of the digestive tract and the foundation of a healthy gut. It slows sugar absorption, promotes satiety, and feeds the beneficial bacteria in your microbiome. By consistently including high-fiber foods, we support a healthy gut, which directly influences our serotonin production and, therefore, our mood and emotional regulation.

A Note From Cortney

Cultivating Curiosity is Essential—Here’s Why.

Curiosity is the fuel for intentional living. Before I began my career in healthcare communications, I lived in Asia for three years. I’ve always been curious, and traveling took my thirst for knowledge to a new level.

Today, one of my favorite things to do is visit farmers’ markets and the international foods section of grocery stores. From exploring the street markets in the narrow alleys of Southeast Asia to my dinner table at our home north of Atlanta, Georgia, my curiosity has been driven by a fascination with the simple, miraculous power of whole foods.

For instance, a humble green like watercress contains a remarkable range of essential nutrients, often surpassing some of our “superfood” favorites. The same is true of broccoli microgreens. Knowing these facts changes how you approach a simple salad! My husband can attest to our freeze full of flash frozen hydroponic microgreens!

I encourage you to bring this curiosity into your kitchen. Try one new ingredient this month. Ask: Where did this come from? How does it benefit my body? How can I appreciate God’s design in its color and texture? Then, find the answers. The Ingredient Guides Library below is the perfect place to start! This simple practice transforms eating from a task into a joyful, spiritual exploration.

The Unforced Rhythms

If nutrition is the fuel that powers the machine, the Unforced Rhythms are the intentional pauses we take to ensure the engine doesn’t burn out. We have explored the critical, tangible science behind fighting inflammation and fueling the brain with intentional ingredients. But true wellness goes beyond the plate; it requires recognizing the toll a hurried life takes on our spirit and body. It’s about moving away from the hustle of striving and toward the grace of receiving. The following sections explore how we can integrate cycles of intentional provision, restorative rest, and centered peace into our daily lives, moving in harmony with the natural rhythms of life itself.

understanding provision

Aligning with Nature’s Cycles

Provision is often narrowly defined as simply “getting what we need,” but in the context of unforced rhythms, it is a much deeper concept. It’s the practice of stewardship and acknowledgment—recognizing that we are part of a greater, abundant system that is constantly offering us what we need, exactly when we need it. This mindset shifts our focus from the stress of always producing to the peace of mindfully receiving.

Provision is also the faithful, ongoing care of our generous Creator. Our blessings—including the harvest, the rainfall, and the rhythm of the seasons—are a testament to God’s continuous, reliable care. We want to wisely use the gifts placed before us without anxiety over what tomorrow might bring. This mindset guides us to find balance not only in the way we nourish our bodies but in the way we manage our energy, time, and attention, starting with the simple, restorative act of gratitude for the food on our plate.

Reclaiming the Power of the Pause

The Necessary Practice of Rest as a Spiritual Discipline

If Intentional Wellness starts with nourishing our bodies, it is perfected in the surrender of our souls. The deepest, most transformative work of well-being is found not in striving, but in rest.

The modern hustle culture—the pressure to do more, achieve more, and be perfect—is fundamentally incompatible with true wellness. It keeps our cortisol high and our minds frantic. We cannot achieve wholeness through sheer effort; we achieve it through surrender and intentional pause.

The Bible gives us a blueprint for this wholeness. The Hebrew word Shalom is often translated as “peace,” but its meaning is far richer: it signifies completeness, harmony, and whole well-being—not just a lack of conflict, but flourishing in every area of life. We believe that chasing health without rest is chasing an incomplete peace.

Rest, therefore, is not a luxury, but a spiritual discipline modeled by Christ and gifted by God. It is an act of obedience and trust.

Rest as a Core Act of Faith

When we burnout, we lose our capacity to serve, to show patience, and to extend grace to others. Restoring our physical and mental health is an act of obedience, preparing us to live intentionally, fully present in the life God has given us.

The Sabbath Principle is the ultimate expression of this trust. The command to rest is not a legalistic rule, but a profound gift. It forces us to acknowledge that God is sovereign, and the world will not fall apart if we step away.

This spiritual rest is the most powerful antidote to the anxiety and perfectionism that plagues modern wellness efforts.

Scripture on Rest

To find peace and surrender your striving, let these promises from God’s Word anchor your practice of rest.

  • “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’” Matthew 11:28 NLT
  • “‘Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.’” Psalm 46:10 NLT
  • “The Lord replied, ‘I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest.’” Exodus 33:14 NLT

filter the noise and anchor yourself in truth

Protecting Your Peace: Guarding the Gates of Your Heart and Mind

Peace in the context of wellness is not the absence of external stress, but the cultivation of an unshakeable inner stability. When the gut-brain axis is under constant duress from cortisol, the result is a state of mental and physical agitation that inhibits healing and clear thought. Establishing peace is the proactive practice of fortifying the mind against the inevitable chaos of the modern world. This means intentionally creating boundaries and developing inner resources that allow us to process information clearly, anchor ourselves in truth, and maintain cognitive and emotional equilibrium, protecting the entire system from the sharp, destabilizing swings of chronic anxiety.

Trust Check: How to Spot Health Misinformation

Part of finding peace is learning to trust. In a world saturated with noise and misinformation, clarity can be hard to come by, but it’s worth seeking.

It means protecting your mind from things that confuse and disrupt your peace. As as a former healthcare communicator, I know how discouraging medical misinformation can be. I created the following guide to help families navigate through the noise.
