Valentine’s Day is splashed in shades of pink and red, focused on romance, dinner reservations, and grand gestures. While these celebrations can be lovely, for followers of Christ, the day also brings an opportunity to reflect on God’s love for us—and ways to show His love to others.
Anchoring your heart in Bible verses about God’s unconditional love can shift your perspective from fleeting emotion to an eternal foundation.
1 John 4:19 tells us that we are able to love others only because He first loved us. This Valentine’s Day, before you look outward, I invite you to look upward.
Below are 14 scriptures to remind you of the depth and constancy of God’s affection for you. No matter your past or present struggles, there is nothing greater than God’s love and grace.
To help you move these truths from your head to your heart, I’ve included several simple prompts—practical ways to apply these verses to your daily life.

The Foundation: God’s Unconditional Love for You
Before we can love others well, we must truly know how deeply we are loved. These verses are your reminder that you are seen, known, and cherished by a God who loves without conditions—not for what you do, but for who you are.
1. 1 John 4:16
“We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in His love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.” NLT
2. Isaiah 54:10
“’For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,’ says the Lord, who has mercy on you.” NLT
3. Romans 8:38-39
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” NLT
4. Psalm 36:7
“How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.” NLT
5. Romans 5:8
“But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” NLT
Little love notes
It’s easy to read these scriptures about God’s love and think they apply to “everyone else.” Today, make it personal.
The Action: Choose one verse from the list above that resonates with you deeply. Write it on a sticky note or index card and stick it to your bathroom mirror.
The Habit: For the next three days, before you start your skincare routine or brush your teeth, read the verse aloud while looking at yourself in the mirror. Let the first voice you hear speak God’s truth over your identity. He rejoices over you.

The Overflow: Loving One Another
Once we are rooted in the security of God’s love, it naturally overflows. Biblical love isn’t just a feeling; it is an active pursuit of connection, patience, and kindness toward the people around us.

6. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” NLT
7. 1 Peter 4:8
“Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.” NLT
8. Colossians 3:14
“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.” NLT
9. John 13:34
“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.” NLT
10. Proverbs 17:17
“A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.” NLT
love out loud
In our busy lives, we often think fond thoughts of people without ever voicing them.
The Action: Scroll to the last three people you texted. Send one of them a message right now that says: “I was just thinking about you and wanted to remind you how much you are loved and appreciated. I’m so glad you’re in my life.”
The Goal: No agenda, no questions, just love. This small act of connection can completely change the trajectory of someone’s day.
The Source: Abiding in Love
We cannot sustain a loving lifestyle on our own willpower. We need to stay connected to the Vine. These verses remind us that our capacity to love is directly tied to our closeness with God.

11. John 15:9
“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.” NLT
12. Ephesians 3:17-18
“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.” NLT
13. 1 John 4:19
“We love each other because He loved us first.” NLT
14. Lamentations 3:22-23
“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” NLT
heart to heart
Sometimes the most “active” thing we can do is simply sit still and let God love us. Whether you feel depleted or burnt out, lonely or discouraged, remember that you don’t need to do more. You need to receive more. Pray this over your heart:
“Heavenly Father, I thank You that I don’t have to earn Your love; I only need to abide in it. Heal my heart. When I feel empty or overwhelmed, please remind me that You are the one true source of unending, unconditional love. Root me deeply in Your affection so that I can bear fruit. Fill me to the brim with Your love today, so that it naturally overflows onto everyone I meet. Amen.”
A Wholehearted Valentine
This Valentine’s Day and every day, may you feel the tangible presence of God’s love in your life. Whether through a quiet time in Scripture, a moment soaking in nature, time with loved ones, or a shared meal, remember that you are deeply loved by our Creator.
