Ingredients

  • 12- ounce loaf of rustic bakery bread
  • 2-3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Sea salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste
Cook Mode

Instructions

  • Move an oven rack to the middle position and preheat to 400 F.
  • Cut the fresh bakery loaf into cubes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, toss the bread cubes in the olive oil and seasonings until evenly coated.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the bread in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, tossing or stirring the croutons at the 10-minute mark to ensure a consistent result.
  • Remove the croutons from the oven when they are crisp and golden brown. Allow the croutons to cool completely before serving or storing.

Notes

You can make these croutons on the large side, like those in the photos above, or on the smaller side. Just make sure the cubes are relatively consistent in size to ensure an even bake.
